This overview is intended to aid understanding and interpretation of the figures and should not be considered as definitive guidance. Full definitions of published data items, including guidance for data suppliers, are available in the Data Manual and Data Dictionary.

The number of operating theatres includes dedicated day case theatres but excludes obstetric delivery rooms, dental treatment rooms, X-ray rooms and rooms only used to carry out endoscopy. Figures at 31 March are submitted on form KH03 by each NHS Trust.

Pathology departments deal with requests for diagnostic tests for pathology. A department may consist of one or more pathology laboratories that may be located on one or more sites. Figures at 31 March are submitted on form KH03 by each NHS Trust.

A&E Departments are classified according to the service they provide. Type 1 is a consultant led service with full resuscitation facilities. Type 2 is a single specialty accident & emergency service (e.g. paediatrics, dental). Type 3 is an A&E or minor injury service. All types have designated accommodation for the reception of patients. Figures at 31 March are submitted on form KH03 by each NHS Trust.

Radiology departments deal with requests for radiological or isotope procedures. The head of department is in the radiology specialty. Figures at 31 March are submitted on form KH03 by each NHS Trust.

Nuclear medicine departments and medical physics departments are units which deal with requests for isotope procedures. The type of department is based on the specialty of the head of department. Figures at 31 March are submitted on form KH03 by each NHS Trust.
