Outpatient Attendances
This overview is intended to aid understanding and interpretation of the figures and should not be considered as definitive guidance. Full definitions of published data items, including guidance for data suppliers, are available in the Data Manual and Data Dictionary.

Total attendances is the number of attendances at consultant outpatient clinics. Total attendances includes both NHS and private patients seen for their first appointments as well as those attending for subsequent or follow up appointments. Patients do not have to see the consultant in charge of the clinic to be included in the figures but could be seen by a doctor acting for the consultant. Attendances do not have to take place within a clinic session. Visits to a patient's normal place of residence for examination or treatment are counted as attendances. Figures are submitted annually on form KH09 by each NHS Trust and are sub-divided into first and subsequent attendances for each consultant specialty.

Total DNA is the number of patients who did not attend their outpatient appointment and gave no advance warning or those who arrived too late to be seen. Figures are submitted annually on form KH09 by each NHS Trust and are sub-divided into first and subsequent attendances for each consultant specialty. The DNA rate is the number of DNAs divided by the number of attendances plus DNAs. DNA rates are available in this site as downloadable files in the Data Requests section.
