Acute in-patient survey - trust-level data

The individual trust-level reports and the database of trust-level results contain the "mean rating" for 37 of the 43 core "evaluative" questions in the questionnaire. These "mean ratings" fed into the calculation of performance ratings for Acute Trusts.

Individual Trust level reports

Database of Trust results
This spreadsheet enables the results for individual Acute NHS Trusts to be compared. The results that are statistically worse than the best 20% of trusts are indicated by a "-" in the neighbouring ( right-hand) column. Where results are statistically the same or better than the best 20% of trusts this is indicated by "=" or "+" respectively. The numbers of respondents for each question is also provided in the tables.

Calculation of "mean ratings " from 2001/02 Acute Inpatient survey

The core questionnaire consists of 58 questions. Of these, 41 questions are of an evaluative nature. That is, responses to these questions can be used to identify problems that are amenable to quality improvement measures. The remaining questions are demographic and health status questions, filter questions or information-only questions. 37 of the questions were used to calculate performance indicators. Questions Q3, Q31, Q31 and Q35 were not used in the analysis.

Responses to the 37 evaluative were transformed to a 0 - 100 scale. For example, several questions ask patients to report on whether something happened during their admission, and the response options are Yes, definitely, Yes, to some extent or No. These responses can be coded as Yes, definitely = 100; Yes, to some extent = 50 and No = 0. Other questions ask patients to rate a service on a five-point scale ranging, for example, from Excellent to Poor. These can be coded as Excellent = 100; Very good = 75; Good = 50; Fair = 25; Poor = 0. The coding scale has been adjusted according to the range of response options for each question. A mean rating has then been calculated for each question.

Example – Q42 Did a member of staff tell you about medication side effect to watch for when you went home?

Response

Frequency

(1) Yes, completely - score 100

132

(2) Yes, to some extent - score 50

61

(3) No - score 0

155

Total

348

(4) I didn't need an explanation - not scored

139

Missing

78

Mean rating on Q42 = (132 x 100) + (61 x 50) + (155 x 0)
348
= 46.70

Note that, in this example, "I didn’t need an explanation" is not scored, since it cannot be evaluated as a positive or negative response. Therefore, the total on which the mean score is based excludes these non-evaluative responses, as well as excluding all missing responses.
