• The number of supported residents in staffed residential and nursing care decreased from 259,081 to 255,391between 2000 and 2001. This decrease of about 1% extends the reduction in the rate of year on year increases in previous years.  
• 55% were in independent residential care homes and 28% were in independent nursing homes and 17% per cent were in local authority staffed homes.  
• Between 2000 and 2001 the only client groups with an increase in supported residents were mental health problems and learning disabilities.
