Slightly more than half of all children adopted in England had been looked after by a local authority immediately prior to being adopted. Most of the remainder are adopted by step-parents or relatives, and are not included in this table.
The average age of looked-after childrenwho are adoptedd fell from 5 years 6 months in 1995/6, to 4 years 4 months in 1999/2000.
The proportion of looked-after children who were freed for adoption before being adopted has risen from 26% in 1994/95, to 40% in 1999/2000.
