58,900 children were looked after in England at 31 March 2001, 1.4% more than a year than a year earlier, and representing 52 per 10,000 children under 18.  
55% were boys, compared with 51% of all children aged under 18 years.  
38,400 children were looked after in foster placements - 500 more than a year earlier.  
3,400 children were placed for adoption at 31 March 2001, up 9% on the previous year
