In 2002 2.98 million contact hours of home help and home care were provided to around 366,800 households.  
The number of contact hours provided by the independent sector continues to increase at a steady rate (with the exception of 1997/1998).  
The number of contact hours provided directly by local authorities has fallen by 30% since 1997.
