• in 1999/2000, 45% of young people leaving care aged 16 or over had been living in foster placements, and a further 19% in childrens homes and hostels.  
• Half of care leavers aged 16 or over had been looked after continuously for more than two years, although a quarter had been looked after more less than six months.  
• The number of care leavers aged 16 or over has been falling since 1994/95.
