The average daily number of beds available in NHS facilities fell by 10% in the five years to 2000-01 - a fall of almost 4,000 beds.  
Long stay NHS beds for elderly patients fell by 3,800 since 1995-96; long stay beds for other adults fell by 2,500 Some of these may now be recorded as residential beds.
