The percentage of adults aged 16 and over who smoke cigarettes fell rapidly during the late seventies and early eighties but has since levelled out at 29%-28% for men, and 26% to 25% for women.
In 2001, smoking prevalence was highest among people aged 16-44.
In 2001, smoking prevalence was higher among manual socio-economic groups (32%) than non-manual groups (21% ).
