• The number of abortions in 1998 was 20% higher than in 1986.  
• Over 40% of abortions in 1998 were at under 9 weeks gestation, compared with nearly 34% in 1986.  
• Nearly 74% of abortions in 1998 were purchased by NHS, compared with about 50% in the period 1986 to 1991.
