A new non-medical staff group classification was introduced in 1995 known as "new occupation codes"; comparative figures are not available for earlier years.

Nursing, midwifery and health visiting staff excludes agency and learners.

Medical and dental staff excludes locums.

Professionally qualified clinical staff consists of all professional staff with direct patient care.

Support to clinical staff consists of staff working in direct support of clinical staff, often with direct patient care, who free up clinical staff and allow them more time with patients.

NHS infrastructure support consists of staff directly involved in the day-to-day running of the organisation and its infrastructure.
