Figures are of residents who are supported financially, either wholly or in part, by local authorities.

Only supported residents in staffed residential and nursing care homes are included.

"Independent residential care" comprises voluntary and private residential care homes.

"Independent nursing care" comprises voluntary and private nursing care homes.

Client group figures (elderly, physically/sensorily disabled adults, etc.) for 1997 to 2001 relate to all residents supported in homes which are primarily for that particular client group, and may include people of other client types.  For 1998 the figures relate to the condition of the client (i.e. the main reason for the provision of care for that person).

Prior to the implementation of the Community Care reforms in April 1993, local authorities were not able to financially support people in independent nursing homes.
