Data on NHS facilities are derived from available bed day figures supplied by NHS trusts on form KH03.  The data are converted to an annual average daily number by dividing the total number of available bed days in the year.

In 1996-97, information on residential care wards and homes managed directly by the NHS was collected separately for the first time.  It is clear that in earlier years some trusts included these beds on the return under other headings.

Data for 1996-97 and 1997-98 are not therefore directly comparable with earlier years.

The figures on places in nursing homes and residential care are as at 31 March in each year.

In 1996-97 some residential homes that thad previously been classified as for elderly people were reclassified as being primarily for elderly mentally ill people.  There is therefore a discontinuity in the data between 1995-96 and 1996-97.

These figures fall outside the scope of National Statistics.
