1. Principals, assistants and vocational dental practitioners at 30 September.

2. A principal is a general dental practitioner on a health authority/ family health services authority list.

3. Patients were first registered under the new dental contract in October 1990. Registrations built up until 1992 and were affected in subsequent years by improved checks on duplicates. Figures shown for 1998-99 are affected by the change to the registration period to 15 months for registrations starting from September 1996 onwards.

4. Adult patient continuing care registrations at 30 September.

5. Child patient capitation registrations at 30 September.

6. The figures are based on the Appropriation Account.

7. The expenditure figures have been adjusted from previous publications to include the cost of refunds to patients who incorrectly paid dental charges.

8. The Personal Dental Service (PDS) commenced in October 1998 and took over some work previously carries out in the GDS.
