The life tables on which these expectations are calculated, are from current death rates and describe the mortality levels for each year.

Each individual year shown is based on a three-year period, so that for instance, 2000 represents 1999-2001.

The 2000 deaths data used are provisional as they are on a registration rather than an occurrence basis. Provisional 2000 occurrence data will be used shortly to update the 1998-2000 life tables.  Note that 2000 occurrence data will still be classed as provisional until late autumn 2002, when the annual reference volume DH1 Mortality Statistics: general England and Wales (ONS) - will be published.
